Kathy is a third year evening student at the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration-Accounting cum laude from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia and is a CPA, licensed in Virginia. During her first year in law school, she participated in the Student Trial Lawyers Association competitions, was a semi-finalist in the Figa motions competition, and a finalist in the Hartje Objective Writing Award competition for best office memorandum. In her second year, she won best Draft Award at the CU/DU Transactional Moot Competition and was a semi-finalist in the negotiation rounds.
Kathy is currently Controller for Red Rocks Community College (RRCC), one of the four largest community colleges in Colorado. RRCC has over 16,000 students and a budget of more than $60M. She manages a staff of over 20 in three departments and is responsible for all accounting and financial reporting, the Bursar’s Office, grants and contracts, regulatory compliance for fiscal matters, and is the primary audit liaison. She was peer-nominated and named one of four best Business Officers nationally by the Community College Business Officers Association.
In past positions, she worked for both KPMG and Deloitte as a Supervising Senior Auditor, as a contracted Controller for a medium sized federal government contractor in the process of being acquired, and owned a small accounting firm advising middle-market and start-up businesses. Kathy has presented nationally on federal grant management and compliance including international grants, and on successfully managing ERP implementations.
In her spare time, Kathy teaches a single class for RRCC each semester in either Accounting Fundamentals or Intermediate Accounting. She and her husband also enjoy hiking with their lab, skiing with their kids, and are establishing a small vineyard and winery on five acres south of Denver.
